Horticulture Projects

Gardening is more than just growing plants — it is a proven way to reduce stress and enhance both physical and mental wellbeing. At Churchfield Community Trust, our horticulture sites at St. Mary’s Campus (formerly the Orthopaedic Hospital) and The Foyer, Blackpool, provide calm, welcoming outdoor spaces where people can learn, connect, and thrive.

These horticulture areas support practical skill-building, personal development, and a strong sense of community. Through structured training, courses, workshops, and informal learning opportunities, participants build confidence, gain new abilities, and improve their overall wellbeing in a supportive and inclusive environment led by experienced horticulturists.

In 2025, with valued support from Cork City Council and the Health Service Executive, our St. Mary’s Campus horticulture sites received key strategic funding that strengthened our commitment to sustainability, community development, and environmental responsibility. As part of these improvements, Ridan Composter Units were introduced across the campus, enabling food waste to be transformed into organic compost that is reused within our horticulture projects. This circular approach reduces waste, supports sustainable food growing, and benefits both the site and the wider community.

Our gardens promote an environment of self-sufficiency, care, and shared responsibility. They encourage community engagement and welcome volunteers from all backgrounds, offering opportunities to learn about sustainable growing, local flora and fauna, and environmental stewardship. By working side by side, service users, volunteers, and community members become active citizens, strengthening connections and helping to protect and nurture our shared environment.

Whether you are developing new skills, volunteering your time, or contributing to a healthier, more sustainable community, our gardens are a place to grow together.
